Starshot Scraps Telegraph Wire for VoIP
Over the last couple of weeks Brad F and John Kim have been installing and testing our new MS Office Communicator functionality and it’s pretty wild. We’re getting rid of our old school fixed landline phones and expensive long distance plans, and bringing in fibre optic internet service and desktop VoIP products.
Here’s what we got so far. Geeks brace yourselves.
Instant Messenger Chat
This one’s pretty self explanatory.

Presence Information
You can see what people are doing and where they are, but not what they’re wearing.

Video Chat and Conferencing
You can see what people are wearing.
Plus, no more expensive conference bridges and confusing leader/participant codes! Woohoo!

Call Anybody Anywhere
Now we can call anybody anywhere in the world whether they’re on a landline, a cell phone, or a computer, without getting dinged with huge long distance charges.

Call Forwarding, Simultaneously Ring Another Number, and Call Redirects
I can forward calls immediately to my cellphone if I’m out of the office.
Or I can have both the office phone and my cellphone ring simultaneous.
Or I can redirect people to my cellphone if I don’t pick up at my desk.

VoIP Telephones with Presence Information
Old school telephones collide with new school technology. The phone shows your presence colour (green means you’re online), and is USB powered and connected. Or you can put on a wireless headpiece and go handsfree.
Brad D demonstrates proper VoIP technique.
