Screenr
Yesterday I stumbled on a fabulous little tool (it just came out last week) called screenr.com that lets you record screencasts of up to 5 minutes in length. It’s so simple to use: enter your twitter credentials, and then press “record.” The tool runs inside your browser, and when you’re finished recording your voice and your screen actions, you can immediately send your video straight to your twitter account, or post it to YouTube, or embed it onto your website.
It’s fantastic if you’re trying to demonstrate a piece of software, or a sequence of on-screen events, or as a teaching/tutorial tool. Plus, it’s free, and you can download the mp4 files with no watermarks or branding. AND it’s all mobile-enabled.
I predict screencasts will take off in popularity very shortly – what better way to convey high quality and complex information? And what better way to absorb it? I would much rather watch a 2 minute screencast of how something works, instead of reading a long article about it.
Some applications:
- Tutorials: “Here’s how to run a Webcast for your event.”
- Questions: “I watched your tutorials and I did this, and this, and this, but this happened, what do I do?”
- Demonstrations: “Behold our amazing software’s features”
- Whiteboard: “I’m gonna draw some stuff and you’re gonna watch now”
- Meteorological updates on Hurricane Bill: see for yourself here.
